Family Friendly Tent Camper Parks and Locations Close to Bend
1. Once you’re tucked into your tent camper campsite at Tumalo State Park along the Deschutes River you’ll be hard pressed to realize you are just minutes from the bustle of downtown Bend. The quiet, out-of-the-way but close to everything camp features solar showers, a playground, a day use park with lush green lawns and easy access for tubing, fishing or just lazing on the gentle Deschutes. Natural wonders–Smith Rock State Park, Mount Bachelor and Tumalo Falls–are short day trips, leave your tent camper and go explore. And if you run out of marshmallows, a short drive on US 20 puts you in the Costco parking lot. Or, better yet, flip a coin with your spouse to see who creeps out while the kids are asleep to fuel up for the day at Starbucks.
2. You know a park is kid-friendly when one of the nicest amenities is a playground. At Stub Stewart State Park, you’ll find a great new playground at the Dairy Creek Camp East. Add in a 18-hole and a three-hole disc golf course, a cabin village, a horse camp, miles of trails for hiking and biking and its close proximity to the Portland metro area and you’ve got not just a kid-friendly park, but a family friendly park. The view alone from the Hilltop day-use area is worth the trip.
3. Once you drive over White Pass on US 12 (exit 68 off Interstate 5 North), you’ll enter another world. In addition to be super-close to the hulking white mass of Mount Rainier, and its stunning national park, you and the kids can marvel at Kloochman Rock, hike in the William O. Douglas Wilderness Area, or just look for crayfish along the Tieton River. The tent camper campground is quiet, remote and cheap; bring a canoe and ply the waters of nearby Rimrock Lake, or soar with golden eagles in the dry, but gorgeous Yakima Canyon.
